Who was Georgi Plekhanov?
Georgi Plekhanov began as a populist and in 1883 founded the Emancipation of Labour group, the first Russian Marxist organisation; his writings won a generation of revolutionaries, Lenin among them, to Marxism. In 1900 he and Lenin founded the newspaper Iskra.
He soon broke with the Bolsheviks over their centralism and became a leading Menshevik. He held that Russia was ready only for a bourgeois-democratic revolution, supported the Allies in the First World War and opposed the October Revolution, and he died of tuberculosis in Finland in 1918. Lenin nonetheless valued his philosophical work highly.
