Who was Friedrich Engels?
Born in Barmen, Prussia, to a prosperous merchant family, Engels broke early with its Pietism and turned to the Young Hegelians and materialism. Sent to Manchester to work in a cotton mill part-owned by his family, he wrote The Condition of the Working Class in England (1845) from what he saw there.
From 1844 he worked with Karl Marx for life: together they wrote The Holy Family, The German Ideology and The Communist Manifesto (1848), and Engels fought in the revolutions of 1848. For two decades he ran the family firm in Manchester while supporting the Marx family in London. After Marx's death he completed the second and third volumes of Das Kapital, and his own Anti-Dühring and Socialism: Utopian and Scientific did much to spread Marxism.
