Who was John Dewey?
John Dewey was one of the leading figures of pragmatism and a founder of functional psychology. Democracy runs through all his work, in politics, education and journalism alike: full democracy, he argued, needs more than the vote; it needs a public opinion formed by citizens, experts and politicians talking to each other.
At the University of Chicago he founded the Laboratory Schools to test his ideas on teaching, and from 1904 to 1930 he was professor of philosophy at Columbia. He was a major voice of progressive education and liberalism and also wrote on logic, aesthetics, ethics and metaphysics.
