Who was Denis Diderot?
Diderot studied philosophy at a Jesuit college and briefly law; when he chose writing in 1734 his father disowned him, and he spent the next decade in a bohemian life. In 1751 he and Jean le Rond d'Alembert launched the Encyclopédie, the first encyclopedia with many named contributors and the first to describe the mechanical arts.
Its secular tone got it banned by the Church in 1758 and by the French government in 1759. After d'Alembert left, Diderot ran it alone and wrote about 7,000 articles. Money was short for most of his life until Catherine the Great bought his library in 1766, kept him on as its paid custodian and hosted him in St Petersburg in 1773 and 1774.
