Who was Georg Simmel?
Georg Simmel was one of the founders of sociology. His neo-Kantian approach helped establish sociological antipositivism: he asked "What is society?" the way Kant had asked "What is nature?". He analysed social life in terms of forms and contents that turn into each other depending on context, which anticipated structuralist and relational sociology.
His essay "The Metropolis and Mental Life" foreshadowed urban sociology and social network analysis. He wrote freely on subjects academics avoided, such as emotion and romantic love, and with his acquaintance Max Weber he influenced the critical theory of the Frankfurt School.
