Who was Diogenes of Sinope?
Diogenes of Sinope came from a prosperous family, but a scandal over debased coinage drove him into exile, and he turned against conventional values altogether. He lived in poverty, reportedly in a large ceramic jar, and walked about in daylight with a lit lamp, saying he was looking for a man.
One of the founders of Cynicism, he urged a return to nature and the renunciation of wealth, and by calling himself a "citizen of the world" gave an early form of cosmopolitanism. His meeting with Alexander the Great is one of the many anecdotes through which his life has been told.
