Who was Ferdinand de Saussure?

Ferdinand de Saussure was a Swiss linguist and is widely counted among the founders of 20th-century linguistics. With Charles Sanders Peirce he also founded semiotics, which he called semiology.

His ideas reached well beyond linguistics into philosophy, psychoanalysis, sociology and anthropology, and the ways of organising language he introduced still inform how language is studied. Leonard Bloomfield wrote that he had given us the theoretical basis for a science of human speech.
