Who was Tertullian?
Tertullian of Carthage was the first Christian author to produce a large body of Latin Christian writing, which has earned him the titles father of Latin Christianity and founder of Western theology. He wrote apologetics and polemics against what he saw as heresy, Gnosticism included.
He is the first Latin writer known to use the word trinity. Some of his teachings, such as the subordination of the Son and the Spirit to the Father, were later rejected by the Church. He joined the Montanists later in life, though most scholars now doubt that he left the mainstream church.
