Who was Fyodor Dostoevsky?
Born in Moscow, Dostoevsky trained as a military engineer and entered literature with his first novel, Poor Folk. In 1849 he was arrested for belonging to the Petrashevsky Circle, which discussed books banned in Tsarist Russia; his death sentence was commuted at the last moment to four years of hard labour in Siberia, the basis of The House of the Dead.
His great novels, Crime and Punishment (1866), The Idiot, Demons, The Adolescent and The Brothers Karamazov (1880), probe the human condition through the political and religious turmoil of 19th-century Russia. Notes from Underground (1864) is counted among the first works of existentialist literature, and Nietzsche called him "the only psychologist from whom I had something to learn".
