Who was Ludwig Feuerbach?
Ludwig Feuerbach studied under Hegel in Berlin and became a leading Young Hegelian. His first book, attacking personal immortality, ended his university career in 1830, and he wrote most of his work in rural isolation, supported by his wife's share in a porcelain factory.
In The Essence of Christianity (1841) he argued that God is a projection of humanity's own best qualities, and he read Hegel's idealism as the last, most abstract form of theology. His materialism and theory of alienation passed to Marx and Engels, though Marx criticised him in the Theses on Feuerbach as too contemplative. Nietzsche and Freud also read him.
