Who was Henri Bergson?
Henri Bergson argued that immediate experience and intuition tell us more about reality than abstract reasoning and science. He was influential in both analytic and continental philosophy until the Second World War, and again after Gilles Deleuze published Bergsonism in 1966.
He won the 1927 Nobel Prize in Literature, and in 1930 France gave him the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour. His popularity also stirred controversy, since his views seemed to oppose the secular, scientific outlook of the Republic's officials.
