Who was Claude Lévi-Strauss?
Claude Lévi-Strauss, a Belgian-born French anthropologist, was central to structuralism and structural anthropology. He held the chair of social anthropology at the Collège de France from 1959 to 1982 and was elected to the Académie française in 1973.
He argued that the "savage" mind has the same structures as the "civilised" one and that human traits are the same everywhere. Tristes Tropiques (1955) made him a leading figure of structuralism, and his ideas spread from anthropology into philosophy and the rest of the humanities.
