Who was Theodor W. Adorno?
Theodor W. Adorno was a leading member of the Frankfurt School of critical theory, which drew on Freud, Marx and Hegel to criticise modern society. Trained as a musician, he studied composition with Alban Berg, and during exile in California he advised Thomas Mann on the novel Doctor Faustus.
His books Dialectic of Enlightenment (1947), Minima Moralia and Negative Dialectics attack fascism and what he called the culture industry, and they shaped the European New Left. Back in Frankfurt he debated Karl Popper over positivism, criticised Heidegger's jargon of authenticity and wrote about German responsibility for the Holocaust. His unfinished Aesthetic Theory appeared in 1970.
