Who was Charles Sanders Peirce?
Charles Sanders Peirce, trained as a chemist and employed as a scientist for thirty years, is sometimes called the father of pragmatism. Bertrand Russell thought him the greatest American thinker ever. He contributed theories of relations and quantification to logic and founded semiotics, the study of signs.
He defined abductive reasoning, helped found statistics and saw as early as 1886 that logical operations could be carried out by electrical switching circuits. In metaphysics he was an objective idealist and a realist about universals, and he treated continuity and chance as real features of the world.
