Who was Wilhelm Dilthey?
Wilhelm Dilthey held Hegel's old chair of philosophy at the University of Berlin. He set out to give the human sciences, history, hermeneutics and the young discipline of psychology, a methodological foundation of their own beside the natural sciences.
His idea of experience came from German philosophy and literature rather than British empiricism, but his stress on lived experience and historical evidence sometimes earned him the label empiricist in an age of idealism.
