Who was Ernst Mach?
Ernst Mach was an Austrian physicist who studied shock waves; the Mach number, the ratio of a speed to the speed of sound, is named after him.
As a philosopher of science he strongly influenced logical positivism and American pragmatism, and his critique of Newton's absolute space and time anticipated Einstein's theory of relativity.
