Who was Peter Kropotkin?
Born into an aristocratic family, Peter Kropotkin served as an army officer in Siberia and took part in geological expeditions there. Jailed for his activism in 1874, he escaped two years later and spent 41 years in exile in Switzerland, France, where he served nearly four years in prison, and England. He returned to Russia after the 1917 revolution and was disappointed by the Bolshevik state.
He argued for a decentralised communist society without central government, built on voluntary associations of self-governing communities and worker-run enterprises. His best-known books are The Conquest of Bread (1892) and Fields, Factories and Workshops, and Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution (1902) was his main scientific work. He also wrote the article on anarchism for the 11th edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica.
