Who was Jacques Derrida?
Jacques Derrida developed deconstruction through close readings of Saussure's linguistics and of Husserl's and Heidegger's phenomenology. He is often grouped with post-structuralism and postmodern philosophy, though he distanced himself from both labels. He published more than 40 books, and for the last two decades of his life taught at the University of California, Irvine.
Speech and Phenomena, Of Grammatology and Writing and Difference all appeared in 1967. His work spread into literary studies, law, anthropology, architecture, where it gave rise to deconstructivism, and music. His later writing turned to ethics and politics. His style was famously hard, and that made him as controversial as he was well known.
