Who was Maurice Merleau-Ponty?
Maurice Merleau-Ponty, a French phenomenologist shaped by Husserl and Heidegger, studied how meaning arises in human experience and wrote on perception, art, politics, psychology, language and history. In 1945 he founded the journal Les Temps modernes with Sartre and Beauvoir and served as its lead editor.
At the centre of his work is perception, understood as a dialogue between the lived body and the world. Against a long tradition that made consciousness the source of knowledge, he put the body first. He was the only major phenomenologist of his time to engage closely with the sciences, and his last, unfinished work, The Visible and the Invisible, turns to an ontology of "the flesh of the world".
