Who was Roman Jakobson?

Roman Jakobson, a Russian-born linguist, was a pioneer of structural linguistics. With Nikolai Trubetzkoy he worked out new ways to analyse the sound systems of languages, in effect founding modern phonology, and he later applied the same principles to syntax, morphology and meaning. He also wrote major studies of Russian case and verb.

Through his influence on Claude Lévi-Strauss and Roland Barthes, structural analysis spread from linguistics into anthropology, philosophy and literary theory. His theory of distinctive features shaped the early thinking of Noam Chomsky.
