Who was Simone de Beauvoir?
Simone de Beauvoir was a French existentialist writer, social theorist and feminist activist. She did not call herself a philosopher, yet she shaped both feminist existentialism and feminist theory. Her best-known work, The Second Sex (1949), is a detailed analysis of women's oppression and a founding text of contemporary feminism.
Her novels include She Came to Stay (1943) and The Mandarins (1954), and she wrote several volumes of memoirs, starting with Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter (1958). She received the Prix Goncourt in 1954 and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature three times. She and Jean-Paul Sartre shared a long open relationship.
