Who was Jacques Lacan?
Jacques Lacan, a French psychoanalyst and psychiatrist, gave yearly seminars in Paris from 1952 to 1980; his papers were collected in Écrits. He read Freud through structural linguistics and anthropology, added logic and topology, and called his project a "return to Freud" against schools that adapted Freud to social norms.
His changes to clinical practice got him and his followers expelled from the International Psychoanalytic Association, and he founded new institutions of his own. His work had a large effect on post-structuralism, critical theory, feminist theory and film theory.
