Who was Simone Weil?
Simone Weil was born in Paris to an Alsatian Jewish family; her brother André became a well-known mathematician. She taught through the 1930s with breaks for illness and activism, sided with the anarchist Durruti Column in the Spanish Civil War and spent a year as a factory worker, mostly in car plants, to understand the working class.
Drawn to the ascetic, egalitarian side of Christianity, she grew more religious and mystical over time. She died of heart failure in 1943 while working for the Free French in Britain, having cut her food in solidarity with occupied France. Most of her writing became known only after her death, and by the 1950s and 1960s it was widely read in Europe and the English-speaking world.
