Who was Friedrich Schlegel?
Friedrich Schlegel and his elder brother August Wilhelm were the central figures of Jena Romanticism. He studied classical literature, founded journals such as the Athenaeum and in 1808 converted to Catholicism, then moved to Austria to serve Metternich as a diplomat and journalist.
He was a pioneer of Indo-European studies and comparative linguistics and was the first to notice what became Grimm's law. His Romantic ideas inspired Coleridge and Mickiewicz, and Schubert, Mendelssohn and Schumann set some of his poems to music.
