Who was Pyotr Chaadayev?
Pyotr Chaadayev, from a wealthy Moscow noble family, served with distinction in the Napoleonic Wars. Between 1826 and 1831 he wrote eight Philosophical Letters in French, which circulated in manuscript and accused Russia of lagging far behind the West, mocked Orthodoxy and praised Europe's reason, science and freedom.
After some of them were published the government banned them all and, having nothing to charge him with, declared him insane and placed him under medical supervision.
