Who was Frantz Fanon?
Frantz Fanon was a psychiatrist and political philosopher who studied the psychological damage of colonisation and the human and social consequences of decolonisation. Working as a doctor during the Algerian War of independence, he joined the National Liberation Front.
Historians have called him the most influential anticolonial thinker of his time, and his work has inspired liberation movements from Sri Lanka to South Africa and the United States. In psychiatry he argued that many patients do better within their families and communities than in institutions, and he helped found institutional psychotherapy.
