Who was W. E. B. Du Bois?
W. E. B. Du Bois grew up in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, and became the first African American to earn a doctorate at Harvard. He led the Niagara Movement, opposed the Atlanta Compromise and in 1909 helped found the NAACP. He argued that an educated "talented tenth" of African Americans should lead the fight for full civil rights.
His essays The Souls of Black Folk became a founding work of African-American literature, and Black Reconstruction in America (1935) overturned the view that Black Americans were to blame for the failures of Reconstruction. A Pan-Africanist and later a socialist, he organised Pan-African congresses against colonial rule and died in Ghana in 1963.
