Who was Edward Said?
Edward Said was born in Jerusalem, grew up partly in Egypt and studied at Princeton and Harvard. From 1963 to 2003 he taught literature at Columbia University and became one of the founders of post-colonial studies, drawing on Gramsci, Fanon, Foucault and Adorno.
His best-known book, Orientalism (1978), examines how the West has pictured the East. He sat on the Palestinian National Council and supported a two-state solution, resigned in 1993 over the Oslo Accords, and by 1999 argued that lasting peace required a single Israeli-Palestinian state.
