Who was Clement of Alexandria?
Clement of Alexandria, an educated convert who knew Greek philosophy and literature well, taught at the Catechetical School of Alexandria, where Origen was among his pupils. No Christian thinker of his time drew more on Hellenistic philosophy, especially Plato and the Stoics.
He even argued that Greek philosophy began among non-Greeks and that Plato and Pythagoras learned from Egyptian scholars. He is usually counted a Church Father, but in 1586 his name was removed from the Roman Martyrology, and the Orthodox Church stopped venerating him in the 10th century.
