Who was Gregory of Nyssa?
Gregory of Nyssa was bishop of Nyssa and, with his elder brother Basil of Caesarea and their friend Gregory of Nazianzus, one of the three Cappadocian Fathers. He lacked Basil's talent for administration but was a learned theologian who shaped the doctrine of the Trinity and the Nicene Creed, drawing on Origen.
Interest in him has grown since the mid-20th century, especially in his hope of universal salvation. He is also the first person on record to condemn every form of slavery as sinful in itself.
