Who was Ibn Khaldun?
Ibn Khaldun was an Arab scholar, historian, philosopher and sociologist from Tunis, widely counted among the greatest social scientists of the Middle Ages and seen by many as a forerunner of historiography, sociology, economics and demography. He met Tamerlane, the founder of the Timurid Empire.
His best-known book, the Muqaddimah ("Introduction"), which he says he wrote in six months, later guided Ottoman historians such as Kâtip Çelebi and Ahmed Cevdet Pasha in explaining the rise and decline of their empire. Modern scholars have compared his ideas with those of Machiavelli, Vico, Hume, Hegel, Marx, Comte, Ricardo and Adam Smith, finding in him a precedent though not a direct influence.
