Who was Ramon Llull?
Ramon Llull, a former knight from Palma de Mallorca, became a Catholic philosopher, poet and missionary. He invented the Art, a kind of universal logic built from general principles and combinations, drawn in diagrams, meant to prove Christian doctrine to people of any faith.
He wrote in Catalan so that more people could read the Art, and his books were translated into Occitan, French and Castilian in his lifetime. Modern scholars see him as a forerunner of social choice theory and of the theory of computation. Pius IX beatified him in 1847.
