Who was Ernst Cassirer?
Ernst Cassirer trained in the Marburg school of neo-Kantianism and at first followed his teacher Hermann Cohen in building an idealist philosophy of science. After Cohen's death in 1918 he developed a theory of symbols and widened his "logic of thought" into a logic of the cultural sciences, set out in The Philosophy of Symbolic Forms (1923–1929).
He was one of the leading idealists of the 20th century, and recent scholars stress his defence of Enlightenment moral ideals and liberal democracy at a time when fascism had made them unfashionable.
