Who was Roger Bacon?
Roger Bacon, an English Franciscan known as Doctor Mirabilis, stressed the study of nature through observation and is counted, with his teacher Robert Grosseteste, among the earliest European advocates of scientific method. He applied Ibn al-Haytham's empirical approach to claims found in Aristotle and saw the value of testing when his results differed.
He sent his main work, the Opus Majus, to Pope Clement IV in 1267, was the first European to record the formula for gunpowder and helped add optics to the university curriculum. Recent historians stress that he remained a medieval thinker whose "experimental" knowledge came largely from books. Later legend made him a wizard with a brazen head.
