Who was Al-Razi?
Al-Razi, known in Latin as Rhazes, was a Persian physician, philosopher and alchemist of the Islamic Golden Age. He studied medicine in Baghdad and ran hospitals there and in Ray. He favoured experiment and observation, and with Thabit ibn Qurra was among the first to tell smallpox from measles. He was known for treating rich and poor patients alike.
He is credited with more than 200 works. His medical encyclopedia al-Hawi, finished by his pupils, was translated into Latin in 1279 and printed five times between 1488 and 1542, and parts of his Kitab al-Mansuri entered Western university teaching. In philosophy he gave reason an unusually high place, as a divine gift.
