Who was Peter Abelard?
Peter Abelard, born at Le Pallet near Nantes, was one of the most brilliant and controversial theologians of his day. His teaching career in Paris ended after his love affair with his student Héloïse, later his wife, and their story and letters are what most people know him for.
In logic he treated the problem of universals in a way that prepared the ground for nominalism, and in ethics he stressed the role of intention. The Church condemned his teaching on the Trinity. With his History of My Calamities he counts, alongside Augustine, among the forerunners of modern autobiography.
