Who was Xenophon?
At about thirty, the Athenian Xenophon was elected one of the leaders of the Ten Thousand, the retreating Greek mercenaries who had served Cyrus the Younger in his failed bid for the Persian throne. His Anabasis tells the story of that campaign and the long march home. For most of the past two thousand years he was read as a philosopher; Quintilian put him next to Plato.
Though an Athenian, he came to be linked with Sparta, and his life of King Agesilaus and his Constitution of the Lacedaemonians are major sources on Spartan society. His Hellenica picks up where Thucydides stops, and his Cyropaedia describes how Cyrus the Great won his empire. Diogenes Laertius says the sweetness of his style earned him the name "Attic Muse".
