Who was Theophrastus?
Theophrastus, born Tyrtamos on Lesbos, studied first with Plato and then with Aristotle, who is said to have given him his nickname, "divine speaker". When Aristotle left Athens he took over the Lyceum and led it for thirty-six years.
His Enquiry into Plants and On the Causes of Plants earned him the title father of botany and influenced Renaissance science. His Characters, On Stones and On Sense Perception also survive. He continued Aristotle's logic, treated space as the arrangement of bodies and held that happiness depends on outside circumstances as well as on virtue.
